Young Carers Action Day
In the Royal Borough of Greenwich, it is estimated that at least 3,000 young carers – children and young people under 18 – provide essential care for a family member or friend due to illness, disability, mental health challenges, or substance misuse. These young people often juggle responsibilities such as emotional support, personal care, household tasks, and managing finances, all while navigating their education and personal development.
On Wednesday, 12 March 2025, we will be marking Young Carers Action Day, a national initiative dedicated to raising awareness of the vital role young carers play in our communities. This year’s theme, “Give Me a Break“, highlights the challenges young carers face and the support they need to thrive. We are using this opportunity to bring together professionals across sectors to help identify, support, and advocate for young carers.
How You Can Support Young Carers
We encourage professionals working with children, young people, and families:
- Raise awareness within your organisation about young carers and available support services
- Review your approach to identifying and supporting young carers within your service
- Promote #YoungCarersActionDay on social media and in professional networks
- Engage with Imago, who work with Greenwich schools to support young carers. Please see the attached poster and resources for further details or contact Greenwich Imago (kathryn.hughes@imago.community).
- Explore local support available to young carers outside of school by visiting Home | Greenwich Community Directory
If you would like to be part of the ongoing work to strengthen local support for young carers, please get in touch with Sherry.Glasgow@royalgreenwich.gov.uk. We are working closely with partners to ensure young carers receive the recognition and assistance they deserve.
Thank you for your support in making a difference in the lives of young carers.
