Children and Young People in Greenwich are not getting enough sleep

We know that good quality sleep is essential for children and young people’s growth and development. The recent SHEU survey showed that significant numbers of children and young people in Greenwich, of all ages, are not getting enough sleep. Key headlines from the survey include:

• 73% of primary pupils responded that they got at least eight hours sleep the night before the survey. This was a decrease from 84% in 2018.
• Overall, 48% of all primary pupils had less than 8 hours sleep the night before.
• 7% of all primary pupils had less than 6 hours sleep.
• 47% of secondary pupils responded that they got at least eight hours’ sleep the night before the survey. This was a decrease 62% in 2018.
• 50% of Year 8 pupils had less than 8 hours sleep, compared to 56% in Year 10/11, and 77% in Year 12.
• 17% of all secondary pupils had 5 hours or fewer.
• 23% of post-16 pupils responded that they got at least eight hours’ sleep the night before the survey. This was a decrease from 42% in 2018.
