We hope you all had a lovely summer and managed to have some time to rest and re-charge.

As for all agencies keeping our programme of training, work groups and practice reviews going throughout the pandemic has been both a steep learning curve and a challenge, but with the support of all the key Greenwich partners who work with children we are proud that we have managed to keep going, adapted and continue to work well together focusing on the issues that matter the most to children and families. We are now busy planning for the Autumn and Winter

Over the coming months, the GSCP will be focusing on our Annual Report for 2020-21, sharing learning from Local Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews and other learning activities via various platforms including webcasts, 7-minute briefings and developing and monitoring multi-agency action plans.

Young Carers Strategy

Earlier in the year, the GSCP established a multi-agency task and finish group to develop a strategy for Young Carers and this work will continue into the autumn. The scope of the group is to:

• Review the current system for identifying Young Carers
• Review the current available support for Young Carers including available resources
• Explore and develop identification and referrals routes
• Identify improvements in available support
• Develop a Partnership Strategy

A Young Carer is defined as a person under 18 who provides or intends to provide care for another person (of any age, except where that care is provided for payment, pursuant to a contract or as voluntary work) who is physically or mentally ill, frail, elderly, disabled or misuses alcohol or substances.

The majority of Young Carers are proud to provide care for a friend or family member and we want to support them in continuing to provide that care. In doing so, we want to ensure Young Carers receive support to maintain attainment, good mental health and emotional well-being, spend time with their friends and, receive respite from their caring responsibilities.

Young People’s Participation

The voice of children and young people should be at the heart of our Safeguarding Work.

You may be aware that the GSCP Audit Work Group has recently completed an audit which involved interviewing young people regarding the support and/or interventions that they have experienced to gain an understanding of what they have viewed as impactful and what they have valued. It will come as no surprise that having their voice heard and listened to, and being involved in the decisions made about their life were significant themes.

The GSCP is committed to including the children and young people in our work and over the past year have been developing a more formal process to carry this out in our work. We are currently working with the various Greenwich Participation Groups to develop this further. If you have any thoughts about this or know of a Participation Group that would like to be involved, please email emma.rodriguez@royalgreenwich.gov.uk

Announcement

Some of you may be aware that Marie Busairu, GSCP Business Support Officer will be leaving us at the end of September. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Marie for all her hard work over the past two years and wish her the very best for the future. We will miss Marie’s infectious laugh and incredibly caring and supportive nature.

Thank you, Marie!
