Jon Kelly, Headteacher at Newhaven School will become the Chair of the School’s Safeguarding Network from September. Jon has been a member of the group for many years and brings a lot of experience to the group. Jon has been a teacher for 30 years working in mainstream as a geography teacher, Head of Department, SENCO and assistant head before moving to Newhaven in 2013. Jon started at Newhaven as a deputy head leading on NEST (Newhaven Educational Support Team which is an area of Newhaven School which educates secondary students who are unable to attend mainstream school due to psychological health or physical conditions), before heading up the establishment of King’s Park. Jon became headteacher in September 2019. I am sure you will all welcome and support Jon in his new role within the GSCP.

During this month there was Mental Health Awareness Week , with the focus this year on Anxiety. With the pressures everyone has been and, is experiencing over recent years, anxiety has increased especially for our most vulnerable families. There are many resources available online for colleagues, as well as the children, young people and, families. I have shared some of the available resources below:

• Every Mind Matters from the NHS is a national website with lots of ideas, information and expert advice. Every Mind Matters – NHS (www.nhs.uk)

• Good Thinking has digital tools for help with sleep, anxiety, low mood and stress, and features free NHS approved apps and guides. They have also developed some resources for people from different faith backgrounds that include help in a number of different languages. Digital mental health and wellbeing support for Londoners | Good Thinking (good-thinking.uk)

• The Live Well Greenwich website signposts to a range of resources, categorised by the type of support yourself or a family may need.  Get more support if you need it – Live Well Greenwich

If you are interested in increasing your knowledge and skills around mental health, Bridge Support have been commissioned to provide Mental Health Awareness Training for staff and volunteers in Greenwich.
